The museum was visited by the daughter, grandson & great-grandson of Kohima veteran Dennis (Joe) Dernie, Royal Army Service Corps, 6th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.

Over three hundred people attended the annual Battle of Kohima service of remembrance in the Dean’s Park of York Minster on July 4 2024. Over one hundred visited the Kohima Museum afterwards.

York Minster, Thursday 4th July 2024 11.00am

We will be gathering once again in the Dean’s Garden of York Minster to commemorate the battle of Kohima on Thursday 4^th July at 11.00am.

At 10.30 on June 22 1944, Durham Light Infantry of 2 British Infantry Division, moving south from Kohima, met 1/17 Dogras of 5 Indian Infantry Division, moving north from Imphal. The road was open at last to allow supplies through. The siege of Imphal was over.

Captain Sean Kelly, 2 Durham Light Infantry, wrote:

“Imphal was relieved. We sat alone in the sunshine & smoked & ate. Soon the staff cars came purring both ways. It was a lovely day.”

A great visit from the University of York History Society. These lovely undergraduates stayed three hours & were so interested in the museum. It was a huge pleasure showing them round.

On 4th May 1944, British 2nd Division launched three coordinated attacks on Japanese 31st Division in an attempt to re-open the crucial supply line from Dimapur to Allied 4 Corps at Imphal.
